C’est parti! Quiconque le souhaite peut désormais s’inscrire ici gratuitement au premier cours ouvert en ligne de MITx qui permettra d’obtenir une accréditation : 6.002x: Circuits and Electronics qui débutera en mars prochain. Une vidéo promotionnelle (2 min 33) annonce le cours.
Si l’annonce d’avant Noël avait fait bien des vagues, surtout en raison de plusieurs questions qui demeuraient sans réponses (Comment se fera l’évaluation d’autant d’étudiants ? Combien coûtera-elle [Qu’est-ce que “a modest fee” pour MIT?] ? Est-ce que les employeurs vont reconnaître ces certificats ?), ce nouveau communiqué et les articles de la presse spécialisée qui l’accompagnent n’offrent d’éclaircissements qu’à la première question. Sean Coughlan de la BBC parle d’« Automated university » :
« The main difference is that the MITx version has been designed for online students, with a virtual laboratory, e-textbooks, online discussions and videos that are the equivalent of a lecture. It is expected to take 10 hours per week and will run until June. » […] « Anant Agarwal, director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, who will be one of the course teachers, says it has been “designed to try to keep it engaging“.

Steve Kolowich du Inside Higher Ed va un peu plus loin : « The assignments and exams will be graded by computer programs. » [notre emphase] On envisage donc de robotiser l’évaluation et de recourir à des simulations :
« One homegrown e-learning innovation MITx hopes to bring to bear in its inaugural course is a virtual circuits laboratory that will allows participants to play with chips and resistors and orient themselves to the building blocks of microprocessors — all via a browser window. Instead of handling a breadboard and connecting components with their hands, the MITx registrants will do so by clicking, dragging and dropping in “the gaming equivalent of a physical lab,” Agarwal said.
Comme Marc le mentionnait, le code source de cette infrastructure sera accessible à d’autres institutions qui en feront la demande.
Quant au prix, l’obtention de l’accréditation est gratuite pour le moment, alors que le cours est présenté comme un « pilote » ou prototype.
« At the end of the prototype course, students who demonstrate their mastery will be able to receive a certificate of completion for free. In future MITx courses, students who complete the mastery requirement on MITx will be able to receive the credential for a modest fee. » [Communiqué de presse du MIT, notre emphase]
Pas non plus de contrôle d’identité cette fois-ci, mais un « code d’honneur » où l’on affirme que l’on est bien qui l’on prétend être : « In this prototype stage, the online assessment will depend on an “honour code” in which home students will commit to honest behaviour. But in future, the university says, there will be mechanisms for checking identity and verifying work. » (BBC, 2011) Le certificat émis mentionnera cette absence de vérification : « MITx does not plan to include any protection against cheating beyond an honor code and the natural obstacles inherent in the complexity of the assignments and exam questions. The completion certificate will note this explicitly, Agarwal says. » (Kolowich, 2011)
Seul le passage du temps nous renseignera sur la reconnaissance éventuelle de tels certificats par les employeurs, mais on nous indique d’ors et déjà que la matière abordée dans le cours sera du même calibre que ce à quoi les étudiants en présentiel sont confrontés : « This is not a “watered down” version of the campus course or “any less intense”, says a university spokesman. » (BBC, 2011) Si tous peuvent théoriquement s’inscrire, des bases en mathématiques et en sciences sont requises.
D’autres cours sont prévus à l’automne 2012, probablement en biologie, mathématiques et physique.
