Un article publié cette semaine explore l’émergence de l’utilisation des applications d’intelligence artificielle en contexte d’enseignement et d’apprentissage dans les universités. Outre des références aux investissements massifs dans le domaine de l’IA et le développement d’applications émergentes que nous avons déjà présenté, on y réfère à l’idée de plus en plus partagée par les experts que l’IA doit d’abord se positionner pour aider l’enseignant, et non le remplacer (du moins, pas dans l’immédiat!):
There is consistent evidence—some presented in this paper—that AI solutions open a new horizon of possibilities for teaching and learning in higher education. However, it is important to admit the current limits of technology and admit that AI is not (yet) ready to replace teachers, but is presenting the real possibility to augment them.
Les auteurs rejettent d’ailleurs d’emblée l’idée que l’on puisse éventuellement se fier à des solutions technologiques pour régler les différents défis liés à la formation, alors que l’effort devrait d’abord prioriser l’intervention humaine:
Despite rapid advancements in AI, the idea that we can solely rely on technology is a dangerous path, and it is important to maintain focus on the idea that humans should identify problems, critique, identify risks, and ask important questions that can start from issues such as privacy, power structures, and control to the requirement of nurturing creativity and leaving an open door to serendipity and unexpected paths in teaching and learning.
Dans un contexte où l’absence de transparence dans le développement d’algorithmes peut mener à des décisions douteuses, la vigilance semble être effectivement de mise. Ignorer les avancés dans le domaine est risqué et pourrait même nuire au progrès dans la découverte de nouvelles connaissances:
Higher learning is withering when the freedom of thinking and inquiry is suppressed in any form, as manipulations and the limitation of knowledge distorts and cancel in-depth understandings and the advancement of knowledge. If we reach a point where the agenda of universities is set by a handful of techlords, as well as the control over their information and the ethos of universities, higher education is looking ahead a very different age. The set of risks is too important to be overlooked and not explored with courage and careful analysis.
